As for the date, it has not been mentioned in the colophon or elsewhere, but it is possible to suggest that it is clearly later than theMahākālasaṃhitā(undated, thought to be around14th-15th century AD), but earlier than the fixed system of writing the additional letterla(20th century?).

The religious provenance of the text is a meeting ground of Hinduism and Buddhism: Guhyakālī is a hindu goddess known from as early as approx. vajrakapāli on Ekajaṭā kālī occurs in the Jayadrathayāmala, i.e. around the
