A fifteenth-century wooden-board binding contains this manuscript composed of multiple parts. The original start of the miscellany, the part of the manuscript consisting of pp. 1–140, was probably removed in the ninenteenth century. Six codicological units remain, and, with the exception of Part IV, they all were copied in the fifteenth century. Part I (pp. 141–348) has, on pp. 141–198, Johannes de Fonte's florilegium Auctoritates Aristotelis (Lohr, p. 260) and, on pp. 199–346, Latin sermons, with the insertion of excerpts from the book of Proverbs (pp. 257–263). Part II (pp. 349–396) contains Latin texts on the Mass, confession, and penance, written in two columns on pp. 349a–396, including Ambrosius Autpertus' treatise De conflictu vitiorum on pp. 363a-383b (Bloomfield, Nr. 0455). Further Latin sermons appear in Part III (pp. 397–440b). Part IV (pp. 441–574) consists of an incomplete abbreviation in two columns of Guillelmus Peraldus' Summa virtutum (Bloomfield, Nr. 5775; Verweij, p. 111–110), which was copied in the fourteenth century. Part V (pp. 575–618) transmits Thomas Aquinas' treatise Collationes de decem preceptis (Bloomfield, Nr. 6071), which is decorated with a rather large pen drawing of a bishop on p. 600b. Part VI (pp. 619–638), a single gathering, is written in two columns and contains on pp. 619a–630b a Latin interpretation of the Pater noster by Johannes Münzinger (Adam, p. 160), on pp. 631a–634a Thomas Aquinas' interpretation of the Ave Maria (Expositio angelice salutationis) (cf. Rossi), on pp. 634b– 637a an interpretation of the responsory Missus est Gabriel, and finally on pp. 637a–638b a short text in another hand. Based on the stamp of Abbot Diethelm Blarer (p. 440b), the manuscript has been in the Abbey Library since 1553–1564 at the latest.

This parchment manuscript transmits on pp. 3–87 Geoffrey of Vinsauf's Poetry nova, a guide, written in over 2,000 hexameters, to composing poems. The hexameters are arranged in 25 verse-lines in the center of the page, and accompanied by contemporarily-produced commnetaries and glosses. The script, a simplified textualis, dates from the second half of the thirteenth or the first half of the fourteenth century (contrary to Scherrrer). The stamp of Abbot Diethlm Blarer (1553–1564) appears on p. 9 and p. 88; p. 1 bears the former shelfmark S. n. 312, as well as a note on content by Pius Kolb; p. 2 has a note by Franz Josef Mone from 1819. The half-leather volume reveals a romanesque board-binding.

The manuscript transmits a treatise on Latin grammar, apparently missing its beginning. According to Bursill-Hall (p. 229), this is an anonymous commentary on Priscian's Institutiones grammaticae. The two-column text is divided only by occasional capitals in the same ink as the text. The small minuscule script dates to the thirteenth century (contrary to Scherrer). The parchment leaves often have irregular margins and their size varies from gathering to gathering. On p. 145 can be found the stamp of Abbot Diethelm Blarer (1553–1564). On p. 3 Pius Kolk wrote the former shelfmark D. n. 268 and a note on the content. The cardboard binding with leather-reinforced spine and corners, along with the paper pastedowns and flyleaves (pp. 1/2, 148/149) come from the decades around 1800.

The parchment manuscript contains Alexander of Villedieu's Doctrinale with the commentary of Master Bertholdus Turicensis. The colophon (p. 123) states the name of this commentator from Zurich, and of the copyist, a certain “Hermannus”, but nothing more is known about them. The volume, laid out in two columns, is carefully articulated: every hexameter of the Doctrinale is generally divided into paragraphs of one or more verses and is copied in a larger size than the commentaries that follow. This commentary is more or less as long as the verses and is moreover full of abbreviations, unlike the text being commented. Elegant pen-flourished initials, typical of upper-Rhine illuminations of the beginning of the fourteenth century, appear throughout this copy. The seal of abbot Diethelm Blarer (p. 59) confirms that the book was at the Abbey Library since 1553–1564 at the latest.

The manuscript was produced in the late fourteenth century and shortly after the middle of the fifteenth century. The first half (pp. 17–347) was largely copied by Johannes Schorand (except pp. 17–47) and on p. 123, 303 and 347 is dated 1398. Pages 348–412 are written by several hands from the fifteenth century. The last part (pp. 413–538) comes from the hand of the Dominican friar Cuonradus Bainli and contains several datings: 1455 (p. 470, 475 and 488) and 1458 (p. 538). The manuscript contains predominantly sermons, but also other, chiefly theological, texts. On pp. 17–124 are the Sermones super Pater noster of Godefridus Heriliacensis (from Erlach on Lake Biel), followed by sermons De tempore on pp. 124–303. The explicit on p. 303 (Explicit Jacobus de Foragine) is deceptive; only a few sermons are by Jacobus de Voragine. In fact, the first 58 sermons are identical with the sermon collection of an anonymous Franciscan contained in Oxford, Merton College, MS 236 (15 c.), and referred to by its incipit, "Mendicus". Subsequently, from the eleventh Sunday after Pentecost, Cod. Sang. 329 has a mixture of material from the “Mendicus”-sermon collection and additional sermons from Jacobus de Voragine's Sermones de tempore. After both sermon collections follow a few shorter texts: pp. 304–347 of the Tractatus de symbolo fidei by Aldobrandinus de Toscanella, pp. 348–353 an Easter sermon from Albertus Patavinus's Expositio evangeliorum dominicalium (Inc. Maria Magdalene et Maria Jacobi et Salome emerunt aromata … Licet magna leticia sit rem desideratam invenire), pp. 355-357 canonical dispositions, pp. 358-360 the chapter De sancto Petro apostolo from Jacobus de Voragine's Legenda aurea, and pp. 363-413 a Tractatus de amore dei, anime. The pages copied by Cuonradus Bainli begin with the Commentarius in decem praecepta by Henry of Friemar (pp. 413–475, with a detailed index pp. 470–475), followed by a Sermo de sacramento corporis Christi (pp. 479–488) and pp. 488–538 a text with the title Biblia virginis Marie, with a detailed index on pp. 488–491. The codex has various contemporary foliations. Johannes Lener owned the manuscript; after he died, it passed to Johannes Engler (cf. the comments in the hand of Johannes Schorand, p. 124 and 347, corrected and expanded by a fifteenth-century hand). Since the mid-sixteenth century at the latest, the manuscript was in the library of the Abbey of St. Gall, (p. 353, the library stamp of Abbot Diethelm Blarer, from 1553–1564).

The colophon of this manuscript names the author and title of the work, Eberhard of Béthune's Graecismus, as well as the name of the scribe Johannis Czepilwicz and the date that the copy was completed, 9 August 1386 (p. 150). The Graecismus is a long grammatical poem (more than 4,000 verses) written ca. 1212, and its main sources are the grammarians of antiquity such as Donatus and Priscian. The Graecismus circulated widely. The author of this copy on parchment, Johannis Czepilwicz, seems to be the same as a canon of the Augustine house of S. Maria virginis in Arena in Breslau/Wrocław. Except for a large, decorated first initial, lightly damaged (p. 3), the decoration is limited to rubricated letters and a few initials whose form anticipates fifteenth-century letters with cadels. Given the presence of the stamp of the abbot Diethelm Blarer (p. 25), the manuscript was at the Abbey Library since 1553-1564 at the latest. The manuscript has a limp parchment binding with a spine reinforced in leather.

The paper manuscript contains several texts copied on two columns by different hands in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. It begins with a martyrology (pp. 1a-80a) that was copied in 1434 and signed by the copyist Ulrich Aeppli, plebanus at Sitterdorf in Thurgau (p. 80a). At least five other manuscripts from the Abbey Library of St. Gall are either entirely or partially from his hand (Cod. Sang. 327; Cod. Sang. 709; Cod. Sang. 786; Cod. Sang. 1078; Cod. Sang. 1076). After a few blank pages (pp. 81-95), one of which is stamped with the seal of the library of St. Gall under the abbacy of Diethelm Blarer (p. 81), comes a series of shorter texts copied in the fourteenth century, including sermons (pp. 98a; 98b-100a), the copy of a letter of Pope Gregory VII to Mathilda of Canossa (pp. 100a-101b), and prayers organized according to the order of the liturgical year (pp. 102a-117b), except for the first prayer, dedicated to Saint Brendan (p. 101b). The collection further has a remarkable calendar that advises a diet where each month of the year is associated with the eating of a fish (p. 98a). According to the title on p. 120a, the last text contains St. Augustine's Quaestiones (pp. 120a-141b).

Two parts make up this manuscript. The first part, somewhat more recent, comes from the early fifteenth century and contains Bernhard de Parentinis's Tractatus de officio missae (pp. 3–178), including the capitulatio (pp. 3–9), dedication (pp. 9–10), prologue (pp. 10–11) and collatio (pp. 11–12). The actual text begins on p. 12. Pages 179–190 are blank. The second, older part, comes from the fourteenth century and contains on pp. 191–254 an anonymous commentary on Isaiah (Stegmüller, Repertorium Biblicum, No. 8038; the text breaks off in the middle of the commentary on chapter 21) and, on p. 256, the beginning of Peter of Limoges's Tractatus moralis de oculo, Inc. Si diligenter voluerimus in lege domini meditari. This text also breaks off in mid-sentence. The manuscript is bound in a parchment limp-binding that has cloth glued on the inside. The cloth has detached from the inside front cover, such that the text on the parchment can be read, a German-language charter (fourteenth century). Strips, probably from the same charter, serve as quire guards in the middle of gatherings. On p. 268, in the lower margin, appears a purchase note from 1422. According to the ownership mark on p. 3, the manuscript has been in the Abbey of St. Gall since the fifteenth century. This miscellany begins with a few short medical texts: pp. 5–6 Johannicius (Hunain ibn Ishāq), Isagoge ad Techne Galieni (a reworking of Galen's Ars Parva, in the Latin translation of Constantinus Africanus), § 1–9; pp. 6–7 and 8 have a few verses from the Regimen sanitatis salernitanum, a didactic poem in hexameter on medicine; pp. 7–8 contains a short text on the proportions of combined medicatons, inc. Gradus est sedecupla proporcio; pp. 9–10 a text on bloodletting, with the title in red De flebotomia, inc. In flebotomia quedam generales condiciones sunt; pp. 10–11 a Latin-German glossary of plant names, with the rubric title Nomina herbarum, inc. Plantago Wegerich; pp. 11–12 a text on uroscopy, the beginning of which a later hand in the margin indicates with in the margin with the title De urinis, inc. Si urina alba fuerit. Pages 12–14 are written in a later hand and contain, contrary to Scherrer, not further medical material, but rather an exemplum or exempla from the Vitaspatrum (In vitas patrum legitur quod quidam interrogavit senem quare cogitaciones prave inpedirent oraciones [?]). After the medical part comes on pp. 15–89 a Latin version of the Lumen animae, a collection of natural history exempla for preaching. On the margins of the page appear small diagrams concerning the contents of the chapter as well as additions to the authorities named in the text. The Lumen animae is the only text in the manuscript to begin with a larger red initial and ends on p. 89 with the rubric colophon Finito libro sit laus et gloriae Christo. The next two pages (pp. 90–91) contain, among other things, calendar verses and a text on the planets. Pages 92–97 have a Latin version of the “Letter from Heaven” or the “Sunday Letter”, a letter supposedly that fell from heaven concerning the celebration of Sunday, inc. Incipit epistola dei de celo vere missa petro apostolo ab omnibus diebus dominicis qualiter sit colendus dies dominicus. A prayer follows on pp. 97–98, inc. O dilecte Iesu Christus, felix est qui te amat. The final pages (pp. 98–101) contain further exempla written in the same later hand as pp. 12–14, inc. Legitur quod quedam mulier […] venisset ad beatum Hillarionem pro sterilitate tollenda. The manuscript is bound in a grey cardboard binding from the eighteenth century; the earlier parchment binding with a spine label bearing the shelfmark 758 survives, but it has been cut apart and stapled to the first and last quires, respectively (p. 3 and between p. 24-25; p. 102 and between p. 88-89).

This manuscript is predominantly written in one hand, but with different layouts (lines per page). It chiefly contains excerpts that an anonymous Cistercian gathered together from theological and philosophical works, as stated by the rubric on p. 7 (Incipit libellus exceptionum collectarum de diversis operibus cuiusdam fratris ordinis Cysterciensis). The text begins on page 7 with Omnes naturaliter scire protestante philosopho. The rubrics in the margin and in the text indicate themes such as intercession (De suffragiis ecclesie, p. 19), christology (De nativitate domini, p. 25; De plenitudine gratie Christi, p. 27; De voluntate Christi, p. 31; De passione Christi, p. 33), purgatory (De acerbitate purgatorii, p. 88), memory and reason (De memoria, p. 124; De dignitatibus rationalis creature, p. 135), and virginity (De virginitate, p. 372). The chapters come at least in part from Ps.-Albertus Magnus, Compendium theologicae veritatis. The first pages (pp. 1–6) contain a text on free will, clearly connected to Peter Lombard's Sententiae, Book 2, inc. Liberum arbitrium est facultas rationis et voluntatis, qua bonum eligitur gratia assistente vel malum eadem desistente. The library stamp of Abbot Diethelm Blarer, from 1553–1564, appears on p. 422. The binding is made of a dark leather cover, over which a lighter leather sleeve with overhanging edges has been placed to protect the bookblock.

This parchment manuscript contains on pp. 1–188 books 17 and 18 of Priscian's Institutiones grammaticae (ed. Keil, v. 3, pp. 107–278, l. 12). Then follows the third book of Donatus' Ars maior on pp. 189–204 (ed. Keil, v. 4, pp. 392–402), and the Pseudo-Priscian treatise De accentibus on pp. 205–223 (ed. Keil, v. 3, pp. 518–528). The entire grammatical manuscript is written in the same fourteenth-century textualis. The beginning each of the four texts, on p. 1, 115, 189, and 205, is marked by a 10-18-line painted initial with gold, blue, white, red, dark-red or green; the first initial is historiated, depicted a teaching scene, and the third initial is heavily damaged. For the rest, there are simple red and blue pen-flourished initials throughout. The Institutiones grammaticae are accompanied by numerous glosses and commentaries written in ink by several fourteenth-century hands. On p. 189 the glosses are less numerous and have been made with dry point. On p. 118 and 224 can be found the stamp of Abbot Diethelm Blarer (1553–1564), on p. 1 appears the former shelfmark D.n. 241 along with a note on content by Pius Kolb. Before p. 1, a fragment in paper contains the remains of two long entries. The wooden-board binding has a half-leather cover.

The first part of the manuscript transmits on pp. 3–44 the Canones in motibus caelestium corporum, instructions for use and an explanation of the tables that follow, along with an addition in the same script and gathering on pp. 44–46. In the second part follows on pp. 47–203 the Tabulae Toletanae. These are tables to compare various computations of time, on the calculation of planetary movements and eclipses, on spherical astronomy and with repertories of stars and places. The small script, between a Gothic minuscule and a simplified textualis, dates rather from the second half of the thirteenth century or the first half of the fourteenth century (contrary to Scherrer), and the tendency of the round terminal s to finish below the line suggests Italian origin. On p. 204 there is a Zodiac, the Marian hymn Gaude virgo gratiosa (AH 9, p. 54) and a further, roughly contemporary text. According to the entry N. 102 on p. 3, the manuscript came to the Abbey Library in 1768 as part of the legacy of Ägidius Tschudi (1505–1572). The cardboard binding with leather-reinforced spine and corners, along with the paper bifolia that serve as pastedown and flyleaves (pp. 1/2 and p. 205/206), come from the decades around 1800.

This manuscript, for the most part carefully written by a single hand, contains on pp. 3-282 the Compendium theologicae veritatis in seven books, which in early prints was ascribed to Albertus Magnus, but more recent research has identified this work as inauthentic. At the beginning of each book is a list of chapters (pp. 3, 37–38, 90–91, 126–127, 159–160, 215, 254). On pp. 283-344 follows the Confessionale by Johannes de Friburgo OP (ca. 1250–1314) (Bloomfield, Incipits of Latin works on the virtues and vices, Nr. 5755). On the front inside board can be seen the offset of a manuscript page, which probably was written in half-uncial, and possibly comes from a fragment of the Vulgate (Cod. Sang. 1395, pp. 7–327). The inside back cover also shows traces of an offset.

This fourteenth-century paper manuscript has the oldest work written by Conrad of Mure (ca. 1210–1281), the magister of the chapter school and canon of the Zürich Grossmünster. The Novus Graecismus is a school encyclopedia (with a focus on grammar and vocabulary) in verse, of which eleven fourteenth- and fifteenth-century copies survive (ed. A. Cizek, München, 2009). The text itself is a reworking of Eberhard of Béthune's Graecismus, produced at the beginning of the thirteenth century. The Abbey Library of St. Gall's copy, written in a dense cursive on a single column, is incomplete. It includes the preface (inc.: Notitiam gramatice saltem… p. 3), book I (pp. 4–100) and 80 verses of book II (pp. 100–106), that is, two of the work's ten books. Parchment quire guards with fragments of text reinforce the codex (p. 18, 46, 70, 94). The manuscript has a modern cardboard binding with a printed fragment.

The manuscript consists of two codicological units brought together in a fifteenth-century binding. The first unit (pp. 1-132) is copied in an older Gothic cursive; the second (pp. 133-180) in a textualis, and both date from the fourteenth century. The labels glued to the back inside cover and on the spine give as the title of the work: Fulgentius de virtutib[us], a title confirmed by a note written on a leaf added in the back of the volume: bellus differentiarum Fulgentii. Only two pages remain from this text (pp. 97a-98b), which is brought together with three other collections of exempla: Robert Holcot's Moralitates (pp. 1a-97a), the Declamationes Senecae moralisatae (pp. 99a-115a) and the Enigmata Aristotelis moralizata (pp. 115b-120b). This combination of four texts, which Nigel Palmer called the Compilatio exemplorum anglicorum, circulated predominantly in Germany and in Central Europe. The first part ends with tables and an alphabetical index (pp. 121a-132b). The second codicological unit contains an anonymous treatise on the seven sacraments (pp. 134a-180b).

This paper manuscript contains Guilelmus Britonis' Vocabularius biblicus, a text composed between 1250 and 1270. It contains around 2,500 entries for words from the Bible (inc., p. 1a: Difficiles studeo partes quas biblia gestas…). The words are arranged strictly according to alphabetical order. Exception for the A written in red ink (p. 1), the initials of the lemmata are not executed, although their indications in the manner of running titles should have helped readers to find their way around. The text is widely diffused, being preserved in at least 130 copies (Summa Britonis sive Guillelmi Britonis Expositiones Vocabulorum Biblie, ed. L. Daly & B. Daly, Padova 1975). The current volume, dating from the fourteenth century, entered the possession of the priest Heinrich Lütenrieter in 1402, as the upper inside cover: Anno etc. m. cccc° 2°. Ego Hainricus Lütenrieter presbyter emi hunc librum lib. Gallen. [?] a domino Nicolao Mündli. The seal of the library of Abbot Diethelm Blarer (p. 267b) attests that this manuscript belonged to the Abbey of St. Gall by 1553-1564 at the latest.

Composed partly in parchment (pp. 1-74) and partly in paper (pp. 75-98), this fourteenth-century manuscript brings together three different texts. The Compendium moralitatum (1320-1322) of the Dominican James of Lausanne is built as a dictionary running from A[bicit mundus …] (p. 1a) to Y[pocrita] (p. 36b). There then follows the Symbolum magistri domini Bonae Venturae, as the rubric calls it (p. 37), which is in fact a text attributed to the Dominican Aldobrandinus de Tuscanella, copied by a different hand than that of the preceding text (pp. 37a-72a). The section in paper contains excerpts from the Questiones de prologo quarti sententiarum (pp. 75a-98a) by the English Carmelite John Baconthorp (c. 1290-1348) [https://drcs.zahnd.be/oid/100499]. The cords and the sewing stations on the inside of the spine of the book (after p. 98) show that another part of the manuscript was originally bound in, and has since been removed. Fragments of canon law texts from the fourteenth-century serve as pastedowns.

This paper manuscript begins with Conrad of Soltau's commentary on the Psalms (pp. 3a-210a). Before becoming bishop of Verden, Conrad of Soltau (v. 1350-1407) studied at Prague, where he became master and professor of theology, then rector of the University (1384/5). The chief sources of his commentary on the Psalms are Nicholas of Lyra and the Glossa Ordinaria. The remainder of the manuscript contains various theological texts: excerpts from the Psalter (pp. 212-216), the Articuli de Passione Christi (pp. 218-244), the first page of a calendar (p. 348), an excerpt from a martyrology (pp. 350-354), Jacobus de Voragine's sermons for Lent (pp. 368a-429b) and the Legenda s. Verena (pp. 464a-477b). Many blank pages interrupt the various texts of this volume, copied by many different hands. The ownership mark on p. 1: Dis Buch ist Anthoni Gaisberg likely signifies Anton Gaisberg, father of Franz (ca. 1465-1529), abbot of St. Gall (1504-1529). It is certainly through Franz, a great lover and patron of manuscripts, that this work entered the Abbey Library of St. Gall.

This volume contains Alain of Lille's Regulae de sacra theologia. The two-column text is written in a precise textualis, which, doubled in height, is used as an emphasis script for the rules. Only the incipit (p. 3a), the first initials, and the explicit (p. 81b) are in rubric. The cowhide cover was decorated, probably in Paris as early as 1200, with ten different round and rectangular blind stamps. They depict birds, geometric patterns, lions, interlace, and a kneeing man with a crown and a pot (EBDB m002201). The spine was later covered with light pigskin. On the verso of the flyleaf (p. 2) is written, probably in a fourteenth-century hand, Liber sancti Galli; on the back pastedown, in a fifteenth-century hand, Liber monasterii sancti Galli 1451. On p. 82 is the 1553-1564 library stamp of Abbot Diethelm Blarer of St. Gall.

Only the first initial has been executed. The first four gatherings, written in a single column, contain Marquard von Lindau's treatise De reparatione hominis (pp. 3–122). On the last page of this part (p. 122) appears the 1553–1564 library stamp of Abbot Diethelm Blarer of St. Gall. On the next four gatherings is Henry of Friemar's commentary Expositio decem praeceptorum, written in two columns (pp. 123a–213b). The next quire contains the 1398 report Determinatio magistrorum sacrae theologiae sanctae universitatis studii Pragensis concerning the theses of the Ulm master Johannes Münzinger (p. 216-230). The last gathering contains a text that begins Vas electionis est non plus sapere quam opportet… (pp. 232–238). Except for the last gathering, all parts have marginalia or manicules (p. 134), which have been trimmed. The cover is wrapped in parchment reused from a will, the inside of which is lined with linen cloth in a coarse plain weave, and has now partially detached in front. The will, written in early New High German, the front half can be read: Ich phaff Berhtolt der horiden [?] von Ehingen […] und der darnach in dem acht und súbentzigesten iar […]. The gatherings are directly chain-stitched to the thick leather spine lining. On the front of the wrapper is written in a contemporary hand a table of contents. The St. Gallen librarian Jodokus Metzler produced another table of contents, which he glued to the front flyleaf (p. 1). The pagination (pp. 1–245) has an error: there are two p. 143s.

Sermons form the bulk of this moral-theological miscellany. It is written by multiple hands. The initials have not been added to the first, fragmentary text, written in a single column (pp. 29–74). The next text, written in two columns, has the title De purificatione written in the top margin, and begins Sanctificavit tabernaculum suum [1 Par 22,1] Altissimus… (pp. 79a–102b). The confessionary De septem viciis, with the incipit Superbia est tumor… (pp. 105–120), is written in one column and illuminated elaborately with six black and red word trees with geometric patterns on the branches (pp. 107, 109, 111, 113, 115 und 120) as well as the ten commandments, circled, along with their contraries on p. 117. This is followed by the didactic poem on virtuous living, Modus vivendi secundum deum, written in a single column (pp. 121-124). There is then a letter from a Master Samuel to a Rabbi Ysaak, allegedly translated by a Spanish friar called Alfonsus Boni Hominis. The text is written in a single column on pp. 125-153. The Sermones de sanctis by the Cistercian Konrad von Brundelsheim (Soccus) that follow are written, frequently corrected and annotated, in an early gothic book cursive on pp. 173-389. The first initial is red, the others either were never added or in brown, some with strapwork inclusions on p. 218, 247 and 323. There is a tab on p. 219 and a manicule on p. 266. Michael of Massa's Tractatus de passione Domini (Version Angeli pacis…) with allegorical introduction and dialogues (pp. 389-470) is the last text. The colophon of the last part dates the work's completion to 8th March 1427 (p. 470). The shelfmark plate “T 17” on the wooden board binding with leather cover and a plaited endband corresponds to the records in the 1461 library catalogue of St. Gallen. It therefore suggests that this volume was likely compiled and bound in the mid-fifteenth century. The St. Gallen librarian Jodokus Metzler glued a table of contents onto the inside front pastedown. Pages 1-8, 17-24 and 169-172 contain only the ruling lines for a two-column commentary with extensive marginal gloss, but no text. Other pages are completely blank, without even a page layout: 9–16, 25–28, 49–54, 75–78, 103–104, 155–168 and 471–483. There is an entry made on p. 484. The leaf pp. 53-54 is loose. There was a loose, reused fragment with a hand drawn onto it between p. 180 and 181.

This collection primarily contains scholastic, doctrinal questions on the seven sacraments, as well as, at the work's end, the ten commandments (p. 140b). The two-column textualis is structured using red lombards, rubricated titles and initials. The parts of the questions are marked with inline red pieds-de-mouche. On the back of the endpaper (p. 142) is the library stamp of the St. Gallen Abbot Diethelm Blarer from 1553-1554. The front of the wooden board binding is covered with light-coloured leather. The dark-brown spine covering has, on the front cover, traces of a half-oval blind stamp. The front pastedown is an in-situ fragment, pasted in upside-down, of a very legible juristic text that mentions the Archbishop of Reims and the Bishop of Laon.

This Latin-German miscellany focuses on sermons. It is comprised of five parts of varying formats (Part I: pp. 5–48; Part II: pp. 49–84; Part III: pp. 85–108; Part IV: pp. 109–144; Part V: pp. 145–156), written by varying hands in Gothic minuscule script of varying size. The following constituent works have been identified. Part I transmits the Latin sermons of Berthold von Regensburg, namely four Sermones de dominicis (pp. 5-17, one column) as well as a further Sermo de dominicis, five Sermones de sanctis and a Sermo ad religiosos (pp. 21a-28b, two columns). Part II begins with the sermon Quando hominem… about John 18:1 (pp. 49a–67b, Hamesse 25446). Part III contains five Latin-German sermons alongside a prayer for a Pope Benedict (pp. 98-108). Next, part IV presents the Dialogus Beatae Mariae et Anselmi de passione Domini (pp. 109-124), which was attributed to the Archbishop Anselm of Canterbury in the Middle Ages. The pasteboard binding from the seventeenth or eighteenth century has a white leather cover with doubled scudding decoration as well as two green laces whose ends can still be seen. The first quire transmits various texts written non-uniformly (pp. 5-20). After a short, one-column text De excommunicatione (p. 22) is Jean Gerson's De audienda confessione (pp. 23a–70a). There then follow two works ascribed to Augustine in the Middle Ages, namely De spiritu et anima (cap. I-XXXIII on pp. 70a–92b) and Speculum (pp. 92b–109b); Bernard of Clairvaux's De gratia et libero arbitrio (pp. 110a–138a); Bonaventura's De compositione hominis exterioris under the title Speculum monachorum (pp. 139a–154a) and Lucius Annaeus Seneca's De quattuor virtutibus cardinalibus (pp. 154a–166b). Pages 23a-109b are written in a two-column textualis with red headings and blue and red alternating pen-flourished initials as well as pieds-de-mouche. On pp. 110a-166b only red ink was used for such highlights. Between pp. 6 and 7 a slip of paper with writing is pasted in. On the lower margin distinctiones are often added (pp. 30–34, 72–76, 82–85, 111, 113, 121). Within the ruling lines of column 138a is a number-matrix. In column 138b there is a pen trial (ANNO with flourishes). There is a fair amount of marginalia. The pasteboard binding from the 17th or 18th century has a white leather cover with doubled scudding decoration as well as two green laces. The table of contents was added by Pius Kolb (p. 1).

This moral-theological volume contains a preface (pp. 1-4) including an alphabetical table of contents (p. 2a-4d). The main body is an alphabetically ordered confessionary with articles about each lemma from Acadia to Yroina [sic]; each starts with a red lombard and lengths vary from a few lines to numerous pages (pp. 4-265). There is then an alphabetical index (pp. 266-268b). The scribe, brother Rudeger de Casle, writes in a compact, early gothic book cursive, 40 lines per page, with red lombards. In the colophon (p. 268b), he states that the work was completed 14 December 1351. A previous owner was Ulricus Horchentaler in 1450 (268b). Between p. 16 and 17 a half-page sheet has been sewn into the flange of the front pastedown using green thread; there is an extract of a commentary on Aristotle's De anima (III, cap. 2, 427b1-428a1) written on the recto side and a branching depiction of the powers of the soul on the verso side. There are marginalia. The limp binding consists of a green (or blue) leather cover that is reinforced with at least two leaves of parchment pasted together. The front and back pastedowns are reused fragments from an at least two-column index.

The Summa de virtutibus et vitiis by Guilelmus Peraldus is the primary content of this volume (pp. 9a-290b). This principal text is in two-columns in very small textualis script (50 lines per side), with red, blue and red and blue pen-flourished initials as well as tendril extenders. A small collection of sermons was added on the empty leaves in the fourteenth century (pp. 291a-296b). There is a table of contents on pp. 5a-7b with some page numbers added later. The volume is designed for easy reference: red side-titles and red column numbers are original. At the beginning and end are alphabetical indices (pp. 3a-4b and 297a-298b) written by a hand likely from the fifteenth century. On p. 298 the St. Gallen library stamp 1553-1564 of Abbot Diethelm Blarer can be seen. Marginal titles and marginalia have been added by various hands. On the front pastedown (p. 2!) is the title Summa virtutum. The pasteboard binding is covered by brown leather. The endband is finished in red and green.

De casibus reservatis by Hermannus de Praga makes up the majority of this volume (pp. 2-119). Latin proverbs (pp. 119-120) and prayer instructions for the ninth hour in German follow (p. 120). The text is a textualis written in one column with red lombards and titles. The following text (pp. 121-136) begins in an even smaller script (30 lines per page): according to the title, it is a commentary on Gal 6:14. Pages 137-154 are paper leaves; pp. 137-145 contain writing in a later hand. On p. 147 appears the entry: Balthassar Schmid von Diessenhofen … 1549. Offsets from the compactly written text are visible on the pastedowns. The wooden board binding is covered in red leather with remains of an eyelet fastening with a single leather strap.

This paper manuscript contains just Peter Lombard's Libri sententiarum, written by various hands in scripts somewhere between bastarda and newer Gothic book cursive. The copy of the first book abruptly ends at Distinctio 42, though with the colophon Explicit liber questionum super primum [sc. librum] sententiarum anno domini 1422 (p. 239). There are then six slightly smaller, empty leaves, surely meant for the completion of the volume (pp. 149-160). A further twelve empty leaves of the same size appear at the very end of the volume (pp. 460-483). No initials have been added. The recto sides from p. 165 onward have page-titles with the number of the book concerned. The binding shows signs of the five buckles it used to have both on its top and bottom. On the lower and upper edges is the following edge-title: Sententiarum. The bound cord is inserted between large wooden boards. The endband is plaited. On the inside of the now bare front cover the offset from a since removed binding fragment can be seen. On numerous pages parts of the edge of the leaf have broken off, text loss is minimal (pp. 175, 176, 181–200, 219–246, 317–332).

This miscellany has five parts written by several hands (Part I: pp. 1–50; Part II: pp. 51–86; Part III: pp. 87–110; Part IV: pp. 111–254; Part V: pp. 255–316). At the beginning of the first part is a sermon De dignitate sacerdotale, using Is 60:8 as its thema (pp. 1a-2b) and quaestiones on the sacraments (pp. 3a-40a). Each individual quaestio is identified by a red Q-lombard, sometimes with a face drawn in it (p. 18, 21a). In the colophon (p. 40a) Conradus Jud from Zürich (Thuregum) in Uznach names himself, having finished the copying of the quaestiones on the 8 January 1410, in the first hour. There then follow two sermons De dedicatione (pp. 40a-44a) and De dignitate sacerdotale (pp. 44a-50b). The second and third parts both contain sermons De tempore (pp. 51a-85b). The fourth part contains sermons by Nicolas of Lyra, Postilla super evangelia: the text transmitted here begins with twice III, 1 (Hamesse II, 254, Nr. 14807) on p. 111a and 113a. In between, on p. 112, is a table showing the readings for summer and advent. Early New High German glosses on p. 184 describe the semantic field of ‘expression of lament' (“Ausdruck von Trauer”). The text of the Postilla abruptly ends on p. 240a. Pages 241-254 have only outlines for the columns. There then follows the fifth part containing the Liber de informatione electorum by Nicolaus Andreae de Civitate Theatina (Hamesse I, 7, Nr. 115) (pp. 255a–314b). The volume contains a great many manicules (p. 13, 14, 17, 34, 51, 55, 60, 65, 73, 90, 142, 152) and marginal titles, especially numberings. There are detailed marginalia on p. 78, 79, 214 and 255, as well as a later addition on pp. 84b-85b that also has marginalia. Page 86 and 300 are completely empty. The leaf pp. 299-300 is only one-column-wide. On the endpaper p. 316 there is a charter text dated 1553, June 15, bound upside-down, which mentions the Knight Hospitaller Johannes Wick and the priest Thomas Molitor of the diocese of Constance. On the back pastedown is an offset from a two-column grammatical text (late thirteenth or early fourteenth century) complete with blue and red pieds-de-mouches. Page 50b is stamped with the 1553-1564 St. Gallen library stamp of Abbot Diethelm Blarer. There is a table of contents added by the St. Gallen librarian Jodokus Metzler which he pasted on the inside of the front board. The volume has a wooden board binding and is covered in light-coloured leather with two reinforced patches left where there used to be leather straps on the front cover.

This folio-format miscellany is formatted as a single column in a looping bastarda script. On the former flyleaf there is a fragmentary evangeliary, also in a looping bastarda, (Mc 16:1; Lc 24:13; Lc 24:39; Io 21:1; Io 20:11 on pp. 3a–4b). The main part, which consists of moral-theological definitions and short narratives (pp. 5-297), has in ink original numbering in the centre of each leaf (1-150), as well as an accompanying table of contents (pp. 297-301). Before the table of contents there is a doxology and a book curse written as a shape poem which contrasts the salvation of the writer with that of a book thief (p. 297). A sermon for All Saints' Day is written onto the last page as well as the endpaper (p. 302a-303b). On the verso side of the endpaper are the legend of the journey of the thirty pieces of silver from Abraham up until Judas' betrayal (p. 304a) and a note in German about the pawning of the manuscript: the previous owner, Hans Rich, parish priest in Mosnang pawned the manuscript for four guilders and ten shillings (p. 304b). This final column has been stamped with the 1553-1564 St. Gallen library stamp of Abbot Diethelm Blarer. The offset of a calendar is visible on the inside of the front and rear boards. The St. Gallen librarian Jodokus Metzler has stuck a table of contents onto the inside front cover. The leaf p. 1-2 is missing. The holes from five since lost buckles are visible in both the front and back of the brown leather covering the wooden board binding with plaited endband. The remains of two buckle straps can be seen on the back of the book, each fastened with a decorative tack in a floral design (15th or 16th century). On the front there are two stamped holes for the two buckles.

This miscellany of Aristotelian logic and dialectics (AL 1160) was produced as a single work and written by various hands in textualis. It was then commented in the margins by various hands, sometimes with multiple hands in the same comment. The first part comprises the Isagoge by Porphyry (pp. 1-17), Aristotle's Categoriae (pp. 17-46) and De interpretatione (pp. 46-63) in the translation of Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius, the anonymous twelfth-century Aristotelian compilation Liber sex principiorum (pp. 63-78) and Boethius' own De divisione (pp. 78-96). The second part begins with Boethius' De differentiis topicis (pp. 97-148). The third part contains Boethius' translation of Aristotle's Topica (pp. 149-287). This is followed by Boethius' translation of Aristotle's De sophisticis elenchis (pp. 288-322). The fourth part begins with Boethius' translation of Aristotle's Analytica priora (pp. 323-392). The remainder of p. 392 is ruled but otherwise empty. Page 393 is completely blank. Page 394 was used for notes. The fifth part contains the Latin translation of Aristotle's Analytica posteriora (pp. 395-434). The volume has a green (or blue) cover decorated with large rhombi (ink or scudding decoration). The endband is finished in a natural shade of blue. The volume originally had two eyelet fastenings with simple holes stamped through the bottom board. There are multiple names noted on the top pastedown: dasz buch ist [getilgt] wirt oder sinez bruoder [sic] […] Rug Hanns […] Jacob Wirt von Sant Gallen […] Maister Cuonrat […]. Page 41 is stamped with the 1553-1564 St. Gallen library stamp of Abbot Diethelm Blarer. Numerous details have been added: manicules (p. 36, 93, 276, 302, 352, 416, 432 und 434), topical diagrams (p. 132), a tournament scene (p. 241), a banderole with the year ·1·5·6·7· written on it (p. 244, 245), nudes (p. 254, 432, rear pastedown), vignettes (p. 300), a secant (p. 350), Aristotelian categories (p. 354, 366) as well as crowns (rear pastedown).

This parchment manuscript contains the Institutiones Iustiniani (pp. 3a–91a), that is, the manual of Roman Law produced in 533 under the Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian, as well as the Libri feudorum (pp. 91b–125b), that is, Lombard feudal law, each of which accompanied by the Glossa ordinaria, the standard apparatus, compiled by Accursius. The texts and their surrounding glosses were produced in the 14th century, and probably in France. Based on the annotations of the legal scholar Johannes Bischoff († 1495), a conventual of the Abbey of St. Gall, this manuscript was in the Abbey of St. Gall since at least the last quarter of the fifteenth century.

This parchment manuscript essentially contains Summae of most parts of the Corpus iuris civilis, namely books 1–9 of the Codex, the Institutions and the Digest. The vast majority of these textbook-like summaries have been ascribed to the Bologna jurist Azo Portius († 1220). The manuscript, produced in Northern Italy in the thirteenth or fourteenth century, presents at the beginning, on p. 7a, two larger painted initials, one of which features a dragon, and then follows numerous smaller pen-flourished initials.

The paper manuscript contains three adaptations of the Libri feudorum, Lombard feudal law, and is composed of two parts. The first part, with Dullius Gambarinus's Margarita feudorum (pp. 1a–28a), was probably written in France in the first half of the fifteenth century. The second half contains Odofredus de Denariis's Summa feudorum (pp. 29a–60b) and Jacobus de Belvisio's Lectura super usibus feudorum (pp. 60b–144b) and was produced either in Italy or France in the fourteenth century. The second part of the manuscript contains annotations by the legal scholar Johannes Bischoff († 1495), a conventual of the Abbey of St. Gall.

This multi-part paper manuscript contains a Latin dictionary, a hymn for St. Nicholas, one for Mary, and one for the Holy Cross, as well as two sequence-commentaries, and finally sequences with glosses and superscript numbers that indicate a simplified phrasing. A single primary hand may have made the copies, which were then completed by one or more other hands. Scarpatetti dated the manuscript to the second half of the 14th century; from a paleographical perspective, a dating to the first half of the 15th century also seems possible. According to the ownership note on p. 194, the manuscript was in the Abbey of St. Gall already in the 15th century.

The manuscript contains the antiphons, invitatories, and responsories for certain offices of saints, and then the Alleluia verses and sequences for the feast-days of some saints. The majority of the chants are provided with adiastemmatic neumes. A note on p. 112, written before the turn of the 15th century, has neumatic notation on staves. As the leather covering on the spine and the back cover is entirely missing, the Gothic cover joint is very visible from the outside. According to the ownership note on p. 3, in the eighteenth century the manuscript was in the Abbey of St. Johann in Toggenburg.

This parchment manuscript contains Latin sermons by Berthold of Regensburg († 1272) in a copy from the second half of the thirteenth century or the first half of the fourteenth century. It begins with the feast of St. Stephen Protomartyr (26 December; p. 1a) and stretches to the feast of the Beheading of John the Baptist (29 August; p. 181b). There then follow additional sermons and other texts, including two that bear the titles De passione (p. 197a) and De resurrectione (p. 199b) respectively. On p. 209 the text breaks off at the end of the right column. Then follows on pp. 210a–215a in a larger script what are apparently sermons on the Conversio sancti Pauli (p. 210a) and on the Purificatio beatae Mariae (p. 213a), although both of these feasts already appear in the original part (p. 23b and 31b). In the fourteenth century, another hand wrote a German text in the right column of p. 215 (Wilt du wizzen wie …). According to the note on p. 216, in 1433, the chaplain Jodocus Maiger gave this book to Nicholaus Jeuchin or Jenchin, parish priest of St. Mangen (a church outside of the city of St. Gallen). Worthy of note are the decorative, four-color stitching with a zig-zag pattern on p. 111/112, the pen drawing on p. 150a, as well as the library stamp of Abbot Diethlem Blarer, from the period 1553–1563 on p. 216. The wooden binding probably comes from the fifteenth century.

The parchment bookblock (pp. 5–162) contains in its core on pp. 8–162 a collection of Latin sermons on the feasts of the ecclesiastical year (temporale and sanctorale) in a small gothic minuscule of the thirteenth century. At the top of p. 7 is a table with Greek letters as item numbers and below an incipit in red majuscules, that is partially covered by the library stamp of Abbot Diethelm Blarer from the period 1553–1564. The single leaf p. 5/6 contains a table of contents of the sermons from the beginning of the codex to the Assumption of the Virgin, which probably was added in the second half of the fourteenth century. The collection begins with the sermons for Advent (p. 8) and runs through the Exaltation of the Cross (p. 109) and to the Assumption of the Virgin (p. 112). Additional sermons follow, including an Ad populum (p. 157, 162), before the text breaks off at the end of p. 162. The sermons are mostly introduced by a two-to-three-line decorative initial in the colors red, blue, and green. The binding, as well as the paper flyleaves (pp. 1–4, 163–190), probably come from the end of the seventeenth or the eighteenth century.

The manuscript was written in a textualis probably in the second half of the thirteenth or the first half of the fourteenth century. The old foliation runs from I to CLXXXIII and from CCLXV to CCLXXX (pencil foliation: 184–209). The current foliation is A–B in pencil and then I–CLXXXIII in red ink, and finally 184–216 in pencil. The table of contents, inserted in the fourteenth century on the last, separate gathering (fol. 211r–214v) uses Roman numerals from I to CCLXXVIII without gaps. This shows that several quires were lost at some point after the production of the table of contents, a fact that was already noted on the table of contents in the fifteenth century with “vacat”. The surviving leaves transmit, in the first place, sermons of Berthold of Regensburg († 1272) on Sundays and the Feasts of Saints (fol. Ir–CLXXIIIIv) and then – owing to the mentioned loss of leaves – only the end of his sermon on the common of saints (fol. 184r–184v). In between and afterwards are other sermons (Sermones ad religiosos, Sermones ad speciales) or spiritual texts by the same hand, although at the end (fol. 209r–210r) by another hand. According to the table of contents, there follow (fol. 214r–215v) further entries, probably from the fourteenth century, including a few in the German language. According to the ownership mark Liber sancti Galli on fol. Br, the codex was in the Abbey of St. Gall in the fifteenth century at the latest.

This small-format manuscript contains for the most part sermons (pp. 3–49). They have been numbered (1–39) in the margin by a later hand, which also wrote the title Sermones de tempore and the ownership mark Liber s. Galli on p. 3. According to Schneyer, Repertorium der lateinischen Sermones des Mittelalters für die Zeit von 1150–1350, II.766 und IV.49 and Hamesse, Repertorium initiorum manuscriptorum latinorum medii aevi, No. 31477, the authors of these sermons include Lothario dei Segni (Innocent III), Hugh of Saint-Cher, and Nicholaus de Gorran. A wide range of texts follows on p. 49: seven short letters or letter formularies on pp. 49–51 (including from the Abbot of Isny to the Abbot of Blaubeuren, from the Duke of Bavaria to two bailiffs, from parents to their son, studying in Padua, and from the student to his parents); mnemonic aids on the Eucharist, the duties of a confessor, the seven sacraments, etc. (p. 51); an additional sermon (p. 52) (by Lucas de Bitonto; Schneyer, Repertorium, IV.56, No. 88); the Fifteen Portents of the Last Judgment (p. 53); Odo of Cheriton's Parabola De rustico et eius domino (p. 54); a Tractatus naturalis, inc: Cum alterius nature sit truncus, alterius surculus (pp. 55–62); a commentary on Aristotle's De anima, inc: Bonorum honorabilium noticiam [...] subiectum huius libri de anima est anima prout est coniuncta corpori (p. 63-77). The manuscript, bereft of ornamentation, is bound in an early-modern cardboard binding that has been covered in fragments of a printed missal.

This manuscript contains around a third of the text of Jacobus of Voragine's Legenda aurea, where some texts appear twice. The first part (pp. 1–267) begins with Advent and ends with All Souls' Day and the consecration of a church. The title written over the first text (Sermo de adventu domini, p. 1) is misleading and has led to the misidentification of the manuscript's contents as sermones. The second part (pp. 271–665) begins with Matthias (24 February) and ends with Thomas (21 December). This collection has been supplemented with a few texts from the so-called Provincia-Appendix (Oswald, Ulrich, Pelagius, Verena, Gallus, Otmar, Konrad), which have been added at the appropriate place in the ecclesiastical year. Between the two parts (pp. 267–270) can be found seven short exempla, the first three of which are based on texts from the Verba seniorum. Two scribes took part in producing the manuscript. The change in hand on p. 382/383 (at the end of a quire, but in the middle of a word) is accompanied by a change in decoration; while in the preceding part only a few multi-line red initials are adorned with simple red pen-flourishes, in the following part the pen-flourishes are two-color (red/blue), more luxuriant and finer. The pen-flourishes resemble those in the manuscript Fribourg, BCU, ms. L 34, but in comparison is somewhat less refined. Noticeable in the first part are found multi-color decorative stitching and holes filled with needlework (p. 55/56, 75/76, 115/116, 123/124, 131/132, 143/144 und 147/148). On the upper margin of pp. 7–664 can be found an old foliation (III–CCCXXXI). The cardboard binding, covered in blank parchment and adorned with green-silk ribbons as clasps, dates from the eighteenth/nineteenth century.

This codex, written by multiple hands, contains a nearly complete copy of Conrad of Megenberg's natural history (Das Buch der Natur); only a few chapters are missing, some of which are due to a loss of pages. Quires 17 (pp. 371–394) and 18 (pp. 395–418) are bound in the wrong order. A contemporary table of contents introduces each of the parts of the third book (on animals) and of the fourth book (on trees). The numbers of the leaves given there correspond to the individual parts' foliation, which frequently starts over. On the back paper pastedown there is an ownership mark written in the hand that numbered the leaves: sint der bletter CClxxvj bletter vnd ist dz ůrrich [Ulrich] von fulach. This note indicates that a total of 12 leaves have been lost. As the dedication to Abbot Joseph von Rudolphi (Abbot 1717–1740) on the front pastedown shows, this volume was in the Abbey Library of St. Gall by the eighteenth century at the latest.

This small-format manuscript begins with a description of the festivities for the translation of the relics of St. Otmar and Notker Balbulus into the rebuilt Church of St. Otmar in the year 1628 (pp. 4–46). There then follow poems written for this feast (p. 47–630). These are overwhelmingly the work of the young monks Athanasius Gugger, Basilius Renner and Chrysostomus Stipplin, all of whom professed in 1626, as well as the monastery schoolboy Placidus Bridler (professed in 1630). Most of the poems are written in Latin, a few are also in German or Greek. In general, several poems together form an emblem, which then ends with a Latin and a German explanation of the image. Several emblems are summarized as a so-called affixio on a theme; frequently, following an affixion appears an appendix with logogriphs (letter-riddles) or other riddles. The images for the 1628 affixiones have not survived, although it is clear from the description of the translation-festivities that 976 large-format leaves with images, verses, and explanations hung in the cloister of the abbey (pp. 31–32). On pp. 631–727 there are further emblems and speeches of the same authors on various occasions in 1631.

This manuscript, written in multiple hands, contains an anonymous commentary on the Catholic epistles (Stegmüller, Repertorium Biblicum, No. 3235, 14–20). Stegmüllers ascription of the text to a St. Gall monk named Hermann, who supposedly was a student of Peter Abelard, is not convincing (cf. David Luscombe, Sententie magistri Petri Abaelardi, Turnhout 2006, pp. 49*–55*). The commentary is preceded by two prologues (pp. 1–2), the first of which is based on Peter Abelard's prologue to the Letter to the Romans (Stegmüller, RB 6378), while the second comes from Ps.-Jerome (Stegmüller, RB 809). Each of the commentaries on the individual epistles is preceded by a chapter outline and an argumentum from the Glossa ordinaria (edited in PL 114, col. 671 ff. as the work of Walafrid Strabo). The text of the epistles is incorporated into the commentaries and signaled with citation marks in the margin. On the last page (p. 112) appears Gottschalk of Aachen's sequence for the feast Conversio sancti Pauli, inc. Dixit dominus ex Basan convertam. Ornamentation is limited to two- and three-line red capital initials. The manuscript is bound in a limp binding made from blank leather with a parchment lining and closed with a triangular flap. On the inside of the cover and on p. 112 can be found the library stamp from the abbacy of Diethelm Blarer (1553–1564); on p. 1 a shelfmark from the Burgerbibliothek Bern (Manuscr A 48). According to notes on the inside cover and on p. 1, the codex, which came to Bern in 1712 (as booty in the Toggenburger war) was returned to the Abbey Library of St. Gall in 1863.

The paper manuscript, bound with a limp binding, is composed of four parts written in the first half of the fifteenth century. Parts II and IV are probably to be ascribed to the hand of Johannes de Nepomuk, who came from the Cistercian house of Nepomuk in Bohemia. The manuscript probably reached the Abbey of St. Gall by the middle of the fifteenth century at the latest. It contains Latin sermons, spiritual treatises, and documents pertaining to the Council of Constance in the years 1417–1418.

This paper manuscript has cardboard binding from the 18th/19th century. It was probably written entirely by the secular priest, Mattias Bürer, whose books devolved after his death (1485) to the Abbey of St. Gall. The manuscript contains chiefly a verse summary, ascribed to Adam von Aldersbach, of the famous textbook of canon law and pastoral theology by Raymund of Peñafort (pp. 7–123). In addition to interlinear glosses, a thick apparatus of glosses can be found in certain places in the margins. After two short texts follows a long commentary on the preceding versified work (pp. 135–264).

This paper manuscript brings together various texts of pastoral theology on the sacraments, and particularly on confession, as well as commentaries on the doctrine of the faith as well as sermons. Among these texts are the Summula de summa Raimundi of Magister Adam [Adamus Alderspacensis] (pp. 99–138) and the Liber Floretus (pp. 139–151), both written in verse. The scribe identifies himself as Johannes in a colophon on p. 138. The manuscript presents numerous annotations from the hand of the learned and wandering St. Gall monk Gallus Kemli (1480/1481).

This paper manuscript consists of four codicological units, and (contrary to Scherrer) dates to the fifteenth century. The first unit includes blank folios A–F and has an old, fifteenth-century, foliation 182–187. The second unit (f. G and ff. 1–22) first contains a longer, crossed-out table of contents, and, beneath it, an updated, shorter table of contents; both tables come from the fifteenth century. On ff. 1ra–22rb follows the sermon or treatise De passione domini, which is ascribed to Henry of Langenstein both in the manuscript and in the previous catalogues, but ought to be attributed to Henry Totting of Oyta († 1397). According to the rubric comments at the beginning and end of the treatise (f. 1ra, 22rb), this text was copied at the order of the Dominican Conrad Bainli. The third part (ff. 23–81) transmits another sermon or treatise De passione domini, and was produced by a second scribe, who, according to the colophon (f. 74va) made the copy in 1446, also at the behest of Conrad Bainli. The fourth unit (ff. 82–129) contains first on ff. 82ra-116ra the Expositio dominicae passionis by Jordan of Quedlinburg. According to the colophon (f. 116ra) Conrad Bainli, one of the probably two copyists of the Expositio, finished copying the text in 1437. There then follow on ff. 117ra–123ra excerpts from the four Gospels (a Gospel concordance on the Passion?) made by yet another scribe, who, according to the colophon (f. 123ra), also finished the copy in 1437. The binding dates to the fifteenth century and has wooden covers that were already reused.

This manuscript was written in a flowing fourteenth-century textualis and decorated with rubrics and red lombards. The same hand has numbered the quires in red ink, in the bottom-right corner at the beginning of each quire: II (p. 23) to XXXIX (p. 731). The pagination contains a significant error: 1–501, 511–742; pp. 614–615 are empty. The manuscript transmits the winter part of a breviary, namely (pp. 1-559) the Proprium de tempore from the first Sunday of Advent to Pentecost and Trinity, as well as (pp. 559–742) the Proprium de sanctis from the feast of Saint Andrew the Apostle (30 November) to the feast of Saint Pancras (12 May), including the feast of Saint Wiborada (pp. 716-725). The manuscript shows no traces of its users nor of any additions. On the final page (p. 742) appears the library stamp of Abbot Diethelm Blarer from 1553–1564. The binding, featuring wooden boards with a red leather cover, dates to the fourteenth or fifteenth century.

Contrary to Scherrer, this missal does not come from the fourteenth century, but rather from the first half of the fifteenth century. In addition to a full-page image of a canon on p. 179, the decoration includes pen-flourished initials (p. 77b, 413a, 434a etc.) as well as outlined, but not completed, zoomorphic and historiated initials. Thus, for example, on p. 12a for Christmas there appears an initial in the form of a dragon enclosing a Nativity scene and, on p. 92a, for the Dedicatio huius monasterii, an initial with a man in a tree. Notable are the numerous sequences that the missal contains. According to the possessor's note on p. 1, Sanctorum Iohannis Baptiste et Evangeliste, the manuscript was held by the Abbey of St. John in Thurtal since at least the eighteenth century.

This extensive parchment manuscript was written in the fourteenth century in textualis. Red and blue lombards, rubrics, and red abbreviations adorn the two-column text; occassional red and blue pen-flourished initials emphasize particularly important parts of the breviary and its feasts. The breviary begins (p. 1a) with Easter-eve vespers (that is, on Good Saturday) and ends (pp. 807a–817b) with the feast of Saint Conrad (26 November). There then follows (pp. 817b–819b), as additions, a lection In nocte sancte Anne and four lections In divisione apostolorum, written in the same hand as before (cf. p. 433b, p. 457b). Finally the added rubric Passio sancti Placidi martyris, sociorum eius 35 martyrum prima [?] lectio [?] is written in another, later-fifteenth-century hand. Among the saints feasts occur those of Gallus (p. 662a) and its octave (p. 708a) as well as of Otmar (p. 759b) and its octave (p. 789b). On p. 666 appears the library stamp of Abbot Diethelm Blarer from the period 1553–1564. The wooden-board binding dates to the fifteenth or sixteenth century. Its leather binding is adorned with scroll stamps. The original clasps and fittings are missing. On the inside of the front and back boards can be seen offsets from detached flyleaves, as well as from fragments with writing that were pasted in. Two paper leaves (pp. A-D) and one paper leaf (pp. Y-Z) have been inserted and bound in before and after the parchment book block, respectively. The pagination is faulty: A–D, 1–155, 155a, 156–433, 435–621, 623–819, Y–Z.

This breviary contains the Psalter (pp. 1a–111b) followed by cantica, Pater noster, Credo, Quicumque vult and litanies (pp. 111b–129b), as well as the Proprium de tempore (pp. 130a-533a) from the first Sunday of Advent to the 25th Sunday after Trinity, including the Dedicatio ecclesiae (p. 524a) and finally the Proprium de sanctis (pp. 534a-839b) and the Commune sanctorum (pp. 840a-841b), which breaks off at the end of the last page and is incomplete. The manuscript was written in a fourteenth-century textualis and decorated with numerous red and blue pen-flourished initials. The only highlighted name in the Litany is that of Catherine (p. 125a); this fact, along with the feasts of St. Peter of Verona (p. 632a), the Translatio sancti Dominici (p. 647b, 648a), St. Dominic (death day) (p. 709a) and Saint Catherine (p. 828b, 830b) indicate that the breviary was intended for the Dominican convent of St. Catherine, probably the one in St. Gall (and later in Wil). The seventeenth-century ownership mark Monasteriae [!] s. Catharinae, written in the same hand as, for example, Wil, Dominikanerinnenkloster St. Katharina, M 3, front flyleaf, proves that the breviary actually comes from the convent. The leather cover on the wooden-board binding is decorated with a stamp with the head of Christ as well as with a scroll stamp, and has the blind-stamped date 1591 on the front.

This small volume contains liturgical fragments. They come from six different manuscripts (overwhelmingly breviaries/psalters), of which sometimes multiple leaves, sometimes only a few lines survive. The first fragment (ff. 12r-34v) is written in Latin, but has German rubrics, which suggests a breviary for private use. As a note on f. Ar in his own hand indicates, Ildefons von Arx likely assembled this volume.

This tiny psalter, which was written for a Dominican Convent, begins with a fragmentary calendar (ff. Er-Iv; one leaf, containing the months of January and February, has been removed). After the Psalms (ff. 1r-182v) there follows the Old and New Testament Cantica (ff. 183r-193r) and the Athanasian Creed Quicumque vult (ff. 193r–194v) as well as a fifteenth-century addition of a litany (ff. Ur–Wr). Red and blue initials, some with pen-flourishes, make up the book's ornamentation. The flyleaves come from older recycled parchment, and the pastedowns are made up of fragments from a fifteenth-century charter. Since Catherine of Siena does not appear in the calendar, the psalter likely was produced before 1460. The manuscript was in the Abbey Library by the eighteenth century at the latest.

This breviary was written in bastarda by a single hand, probably belonging to a choir monk of the Abbey of St. Gall. In addition to the usual parts of a full breviary (Calendar, Psalterium feriatum, Proprium de tempore [incomplete], Proprium de sanctis and Commune sanctorum), it also contains Marian prayers, the liturgy for compline and the vigil of the dead, a Cursus B. M. V., suffrages, and further prayers.

Produced in the thirteenth century, this Psalter shows evidence of heavy use. An “instructions for use” found on the back pastedown calls for the Psalter to be left in the choir so that every sister can read it. Thus, the Psalter came from a convent of women. Since St. Catherine is particularly emphasized in the calendar, it could have belonged to the convent of Dominican women of St. Catherine in St. Gall. Decoration consists of red and blue pen-flourished initials. In addition, the liturgical eight-part division as well as the three-part division of the Psalter are highlighted with larger painted initials, which are partially adorned with silver and gold ink. Following the Psalms, starting on p. 240, are the biblical Cantica, Credo, Te Deum, Symbolum Athanasianum and a litany. A few leaves were replaced in the fifteenth and fourteenth/fifteenth century (pp. 95–98, 257–264). Two quires of a breviary in the same hand as pp. 257–264 are bound to the litany (pp. 269–288). In the same hand, an incomplete calendar (July to December) with names of the month in German precedes the Psalter (pp. 1–12). Originally the calendar probably consisted of two quires, of which only the last leaf of the first quire and the complete second quire remain. On the front pastedown is glued the bookplate of Prince-Abbot Beda Angehrn (abbot 1767-1796).

The codex contains the Pauline Epistles with three prologues to the Letter to the Romans (Stegmüller, Repertorium Biblicum, Nr. 650, 674, and 677; p. 1), the Glossa ordinaria, and further glosses. The Letter to the Hebrews ends at Hebr. 4:16. The manuscript, bound in a Romanesque binding, was probably written towards the end of the twelfth century. It is not clear whether it was produced in St. Gall.

This missal was most likely written for the Grossmünster of Zürich (from a comparison with the Grossmünster's Liber Ordinarius); it contains the proprium de tempore, proprium de sanctis (with the major feasts of Zürich), commune sanctorum and votive masses. The chants are written in smaller letters throughout, but only on a few pages do they appear together with melodies in neumatic notation. The canon missae (pp. 73–83) begins with a simple drawing of a canon. With that exception, the decoration is limited to at most two-line red lombards.

According to the particularly venerated saints in the calendar (pp. 6–17, the months are in the wrong order), this missal, written on fine parchment, belonged to a convent of Dominican women dedicated to St. Agnes. The canon missae (pp. 193–204) is introduced by a high-quality drawing, whose similarity to the depictions of the crucifixion in the Dominican convent of Constance has been emphasized in the art-historical literature. But it is unlikely that the manuscript was produced in the Diocese of Constance, since, among others, Gallus and Otmar are missing from the calendar; rather, the calendar points to a Strasbourg provenance. The missal is richly decorated with red and blue pen-flourished initials. On p. 18 there is an Exorcismus salis et aquae; following the Commune sanctorum there appear votive masses (pp. 426–446) and sequences (pp. 447–461). The manuscript was in St. Gall since the sixteenth or seventeenth century at the latest (possession note on p. 5).
